The "unmanned hellscape" is a U.S. military strategy aimed at deterring or disrupting a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan by transforming the Taiwan Strait into a chaotic battlefield swarmed with thousands of autonomous drones and unmanned systems. Coined by former U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) commander Admiral John Aquilino in 2023 and popularized by his successor, Admiral Samuel Paparo, the concept envisions deploying vast numbers of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned surface vessels (USVs), unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), and loitering munitions to overwhelm People's Liberation Army (PLA) forces during a cross-strait amphibious assault.
